Nervous system: one of the homeostasis controllers

What is (meaning):

Homeostasis is the condition of relative stability that the body needs to perform its functions properly for the body's balance. Homeostasis: Greek word, whose meaning already defines very well what it is: homeo- = similarity; -stasis = put action, stability.

Features

Despite changes that may occur in the body, internally or externally, homeostasis is the constancy of the internal environment (interstitial fluid). Storing at the proper temperature (37 ° C) ensures that the necessary changes to the body occur; and thus the body cells develop.

Functions

Responsible for controlling homeostasis are the nervous system and endocrine glands. For example, insulin (which is a hormone) acts to lower glucose levels when it is too high. Another example: In case of increased body temperature, the sweat glands are caused to release more sweat; for they receive the command of nerve impulses; In this way the body is cooled.

Examples

Homeostasis occurs throughout the body. Here are some examples:

- In the circulatory system: here we can see it from its beginning, still in the processes of alternating contraction and relaxation of the heart, where blood is sent to the whole body, reaching the capillaries, where, finally, exchanges occur. At this stage, nutrients and oxygen are transferred to the interstitial fluid, and through this, cellular debris is transferred to the blood. Then the cells absorb these nutrients and oxygen and deposit their waste in this liquid.

- In maintaining blood glucose level: It is through this balance that the brain and the whole body are maintained. For when glucose is below level it can cause damage such as unconsciousness or even death. On the contrary - too much glucose in the blood - can damage blood vessels and cause great water loss through the urine.

Curiosities

A homeostasis body has a great ability to regenerate. For an organism in balance ensures good health. Two factors, among many others, that interfere with this balance are: behavior and environment. Genetics, however, can also be influenced by the factors already mentioned.

Leading a lifestyle that contributes to health, avoiding the use of harmful substances to the body (eg alcohol, cigarettes, drugs), cultivating good eating habits, physical activity and even your way of seeing life can contribute a lot to great health and well-being.
